My name is Iddo Shoikhet — 24 years old, third-year game programming student, originally from Israel. I lived there for 22 years before moving to the Netherlands for my studies.
My connection to games goes back as far as I can remember. I was six when my father came home with a Wii and Zelda: Twilight Princess (arguably the best Zelda). He told me I wasn't allowed to play — I knew almost no English. Naturally, I did the exact opposite. I understood nothing and had to ask for help every other frame, but that game is how I started learning English. From there came a PS3 with Uncharted 2, then Mass Effect 2, and so on. Those stories, those worlds, those characters — they're what cemented my drive to be part of something that could mean as much to someone else as those games meant to me.
Outside of work I'm usually with my girlfriend or friends. When I do get a free moment, I tend to write stories or jot down game ideas. I also play football and badminton, go on walks, and cook. I have a dog back home in Israel who sadly couldn't come with me (see picture).
A person of interest
My professional background starts with mandatory military service — two and a half years stationed in human resources. After a year I was promoted to commander of a small office, where I took it upon myself to automate the team's workflows. During my last six months of service I picked up C++ to prepare for my studies, since the intake assignment was to build a small game in it. That was my first time working with a C-family language. Since then I've also used Python for tooling and have been learning how to write my own programming language.
